Westlake Area Construction Should End Before Winter

The Middletown Public Works director says the removal of 180 pine trees and the planting of 90 replacements in the western part of the city is nearing completion.

The massive tree-removal project taking place in the Westlake section of the city that's affected traffic, including the closure of one lane on a bridge spanning Miner Brook, should be complete before winter sets in.

Middletown Public Works Director Bill Russo says 90 trees are being planted this week and the West Lake Drive bridge should be open to two-way traffic before the end of December.

In early October, 180 white pine trees were removed from the area because of overgrowth and replaced with street-side trees that improve motorist visibility.

This week, voters approved a $15.2 million road improvement referendum which will allow 39 secondary roads to get an asphalt rubber surface treatment.

"We will work over the winter to get all jobs that need engineering design to a firm for design. We are also putting together specs to bid work for both the hot in-place recycling NovaChip as well as rubber surface treatment," Russo said. "We will also look at any jobs we can do in house with Public Works Department staff."
