Mold Discovered in Five Middletown Schools

Middletown Public Schools and the mayor's office are working to remove microbial mold that formed after high rainfall, heat and humidity created favorable conditions for this potential harmful fungus.

High rainfall this season and last week's scorching temperatures and humidity created favorable conditions for microbial growth, according to a press release from the mayor's office. Spots on carpeting in some classrooms were found at Bielefield and Snow elementary schools in Middletown.

As a precaution, summer programs were relocated and a industrial hygienist will conduct air quality and surface testing to determine how much remediation is needed, according to the press release.

This is the second time within a week that summer programs through the city were relocated due to elemental causes. Due to a major water leak at the Kids Arts 2013 summer camp at Macdonough School, the city moved camp July 8 to Wesley Elementary School.

A professional company has put in place 40 industrial dehumidifiers at both schools to prevent further growth and remove humidity. To prevent such occurrence at other city schools, the release says, air conditioning has been running 24 hours a day at the remaining public schools and barriers have been put in place to isolate areas affected with mold, including Woodrow Wilson Middle, and Spencer and Farm Hill elementary schools.

The release says floors at the middle school have already begun to be replaced. At Farm Hill and Spencer, five classes had the beginning stages of mold formation. Moody, Lawrence, Wesley, Keigwin Middle and Middletown High schools had no evidence of mold.
