PD: Homeless Man Just Released From Prison Attempts Carjacking

The 44-year-old Middletown man, whose wife told police he'd just been released from prison, has a record that includes assault, robberies, carjacking and sexual assault.

The following information was provided by the Middletown Police public information officer. An arrest does not constitute a conviction and all defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 44-year-hold homeless man is in custody facing a slew of charges as a result of trying to carjack a woman in the parking lot of a Middletown medical office building, according to police.

On April 17 at 3:10 p.m., police were called to 11 South Main Street about a robbery. A woman told them a stranger had approached her car, told her to do what he said, took her keys and wouldn't let her leave the area, the report says.

He also tried to take her cell phone several times while she tried to call 911, so she struck him to defend herself. The report says Edgardo A. Martinez, 44, who was staying at the Eddy Shelter on Silver Street, an emergency homeless shelter,  was found on Main Street Extension and his wife told officers he was just released from prison.

Martinez's record includes assault on emergency personnel, breach of peace, interfering, second- and first-degree robbery, carjacking, first-degree sexual assault and second-degree robbery. He refused to be photographed or fingerprinted, police say.

He was charged with failure to comply with fingerprinting, sixth-degree larceny, third-degree robbery, interfering with an officer, breach of peace, interfering with an emergency call, misrepresentation with intent to intimidate, attempt to commit crime and second-degree unlawful restraint.

He's being held on a $2,500 surety bond with a May 1 court date.
