PD: Guns, Drugs, Ammo Bust Points to Sizable Street Crime Trade

Middletown Police Chief William McKenna says detectives suspect that many of the items, including loose diamonds and several laptops and cell phones, were taken by the suspect as trade for drugs.

Middletown Police displayed what they termed a "small arsenal" of guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and knives, cash, diamonds and marijuana collected from the search of a city man's home over the weekend following at least a month of surveillance.

Lt. Heather Desmond, Chief William McKenna and Mayor Dan Drew praised narcotics and street crime officers during a press conference Tuesday at police headquarters for their efforts in arresting Vincent A. Sullivan, 24, of 498 High Street on Aug. 30.

Among the items seized were loaded guns, including a banned assault rifle, shotgun and stolen pistol, 1.6 pounds of marijuana (worth $15,000 on the street), a number of loose diamonds, .18 ounce of hallucinogenic mushrooms worth $200, and more than $14,000 in cash, according to police.

McKenna says detectives hope to trace some of the electronics to recent larcenies and burglaries in Middletown from over the past year, and pointed to one Mac Book whose serial number matched that of a Wesleyan University student's computer reported stolen in April 2012.

"It's very earth-shattering when your house is burglarized," McKenna told those gathered. "Most of the jewelry taken is disposed of and the diamonds taken out to sell or trade."

Sullivan is being held on a $350,000 bond and faces a slew of charges: Sullivan was charged with possession of more than 4 ounces of marijuana, possession of a hallucinogen, possession of marijuana, hallucinogen, and drug paraphernalia within 1,500 feet of a school zone, possession of marijuana and a hallucinogen with intent to sell, operating a drug factory, illegal possession of an assault weapon, risk of injury to a minor, fourth-degree larceny, possession of a stolen firearm, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and a cellular phone without a hands-free device.

Middletown Police allowed the press to photograph all the items seized as evidence. They can be viewed here.

Sullivan is due back in court on Sept. 17.
