VIDEO: Middnight on Main Preview Features Japanese Drumming
Members of the Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center performed a heart-thumping, physical music concert Thursday.
Kaoru Watnabe, New York-based Western flute and fue player and taiko drummer, demonstrated the Hachijodaiko method of percussion Thursday evening on the lawn of Holy Trinity Church in a preview of Middletown's first ever New Year's Eve celebration, Middnight on Main 2012.
This style of drumming involves placing the drum vertically atop a wooden platform, allowing two percussionists to play this physically demanding art form.
