Tuesday July 23rd's edition of tidbits of information that you need to know about town.

Editor's Note: Middletown Patch is beginning a new weekday feature that will give you tidbits of information that you need to know about town. Check back daily for news you can use and pass along to your neighbors.

Here is your Daily Five for Middletown. To be considered for future columns, enter your event into our calendar or post it on Middletown Patch's boards here.
  • The Middlesex County Historical Society has a temporary exhibit on the history of the Arrigoni Bridge at the Gen. Mansfield House on Main Street. Throughout the summer, there is show including photographs that details the bridge that connects Portland and Middletown over the Connecticut River, a 3,420-foot span that just underwent extensive reconstruction. When it was built in 1938, the Arrigoni  was the longest in New England. You can view the exhibit Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the first Saturday of the month, from noon to 3 p.m. For information, call (860) 346-0746 or see here.
  • The Middlesex United Way has a full list of volunteer opportunities right here in Middletown or around the area. You can do a search for one-time, part-time or openings by your interest by visiting the site. Volunteers 14 years and older need to assist with High Hopes' therapeutic riding and carriage driving programs for as little as one hour a week side walking (assisting riders), leading horse in lessons (with horse experience) and barn assistance. There's also an opening at the Middlesex Habitat for Humanity in Cromwell for four to six hours a week for people with computer and office skills.
  • Wesleyan University professor and Middletown Eye correspondent Stephen Devoto's name was floated at last week's Democratic Town Committee meeting as a possible Planning and Zoning commissioner.  Incumbent P&Z commissioner Dan Russo, Rob Blanchard and Paul Turenne received the most votes from the Democrats. Devoto failed to garner enough votes from the caucus to appear on the November ballot, but that's not stopping him. According to the No Strip Mall No Wrecking Ball Facebook page, supporters will be circulating a petition, seeking the minimum 600 signatures by Aug. 7 to force a primary. See here to pledge to sign the petition or registered Democrats can offer to circulate one through their neighborhood.
  • This week, the Historic Buildings of Connecticut blog features the circa 1880 Italianate home at 167-69 High Street, on the southeast corner of Church Street, which began as the homestead of the city's Hart and Root families and now is used for faculty members of Wesleyan University. See all the Middletown buildings featured here.
  • Sow Fresh Organics is expanding its service of organic food delivery from Connecticut farms in its new location at the Remington Rand building on North Main Street. If you're looking for a part-time job, they're hiring folks to pack orders, do order preparation, fulfillment and packing, delivery coordination, administrative tasks and they need delivery drivers. Openings are Tuesday through Thursday. For information, call (860) 788-2101 or mail@sowfreshorganics.com.
