'Little Bump' Turns Into a Profanity-Laced Melee in Middletown

Several officers had to help quell the scene outside of the Middletown Social Services Department after several clients and prospective clients got into a heated argument there.

A tiny car-door mishap between two vehicles led to a large, profanity-laced melee downtown earlier this month between two groups of people waiting outside Middletown's Social Services Department.

Several police officers were called to the scene March 11 and subsequently arrested five people, all of whom were charged with breach of peace.

At 11 a.m., police were called to the state social services department on East Main Street in Middletown about a mother and her two adult children arguing loudly with two sisters outside, according to the report.

There, Kelly A. Boughton, 45, told officers she had brought her niece to apply for aid along with her daughter Shannon Boughton, 19, and son William Boughton, 18, all of Kensington Heights, Meriden.

When Kelly Boughton parked and opened her car door, it accidentally bumped the car of Mary Roman, 27, of Clinton Avenue, whose sister, Lucelenia Roman, 30, of South Main Street, was waiting inside, according to the report.

Also present was Lucelenia Roman's three-month-old infant, the report indicates.

Lucelenia Roman went inside to confront Kelly Boughton, and they moved outside to investigate, where the interaction turned into a screaming and cursing match, police say, with Lucelenia Roman saying she was going to smash Kelly Boughton's car, despite no visible damage.

The report says Kelly Boughton's son began screaming at Lucelenia Roman, threatening to punch her in the face, placed his body over the front passenger side of the car, trapping Mary Roman inside, than screaming he was going to slug them both.

Kelly Boughton's daughter began screaming at the Roman sisters as her mother threatened to punch them and Mary Roman threatened the same in retaliation, according to police.

By then, a large number of people had gathered, witnessing the heated exchange, police say.

Kelly's niece was inside social services for the duration and was not involved, police indicate.

All five were charged with second-degree breach of peace.
