Connecticut River Watershed Council is a private, not-for-profit environmental watchdog that advocates for theMore protection of the entire four-state 11,000-square-mile Connecticut River watershed (including the river's tributaries, lakes, plants, fish, insects and other animals). Based in Greenfield, Mass., the council works to restore migratory fisheries, guide development, fight pollution and educate policymakers and the public about the river. It also works to promote the enjoyment of the watershed's natural resources and recreational opportunities. The CRWC is represented in the field in the four watershed states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut by three river stewards, one of whom is based in Middletown.

State of Connecticut Riverview Hospital

Run by the state Department of Children and Families, Riverview Hospital is on a 67-acre campus in eastern MiddletownMore overlooking the Connecticut River. It is the only state-supported psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents ages 5 through 17 in Connecticut. Children are admitted to Riverview when their emotional disturbances, mental illness and/or personality disorder is so severe that they are at high risk or a danger to themselves or others, and intensive 24-hour care and treatment is necessary in a protected environment. Its facilities include two schools, an indoor pool, playgrounds, a ballfield, two gyms, recreation rooms, eight program-specific residential units and a wooded picnic and recreation area.
