The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization run by volunteers that provides relief to victims of…More disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Red Cross office on Broad Street in Middletown is the main office for the Middlesex/Central Connecticut chapter, which has branch offices in New Britain and Old Saybrook.
This chapter has operated a transportation service for the elderly and disabled since the early 1970s. For $1.50, the Red Cross provides transportation to elderly or disabled people living in Middletown, Middlefield, Durham, Portland and East Hampton within the five-town area. In 2008, the agency made more than 35,000 trips for employment, medical appointments, social and recreational visits, nutritional programs, shopping trips and more.
This chapter also has a family shelter program that provides relief and shelter and active case management for as many as 75 homeless families annually. The program consists of seven two-bedroom apartments in duplex buildings in a quiet neighborhood in Middletown.
A transitional housing program gives some families up to one year to acquire the skills to build themselves a stable, permanent and safe home environment. A Beyond Shelter Program launched in 2007 provides continued case management for these families and individuals.
