The Air Force traces its origins to Aug. 1, 1907 with the creation of an Aeronautical Division by the US Army Signal…More Corps. At first, the division was interested only in dirigibles and balloons for aerial observation. But in 1909, six years after the flight of the first powered airplane in Kittyhawk, N.C., the division got its first powered aircraft from the Wright brothers. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Recruiting offices for the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force are housed in the Armed Forces Career Center which is on the lower level of Middletown's Metro Square.
