Police say an elderly male called the school at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday saying there was a bomb in the boys' bathroom. The Hartford bomb squad was called in and cleared the building of any threat by 10:15, allowing students to return to classes.
A bomb threat called into the high school Tuesday morning is being called a hoax by the chief of police. Lt. Steven Augeri says the Middletown High School secretary received a phone call at 9:30 a.m. from an elderly sounding man with no accent, saying there was a bomb in the boys' bathroom. "The Hartford bomb squad was called in, as it is in any case like this," according to Chief William McKenna, and no evidence was found. The building was declared safe by 10:15 a.m. and students returned to classes. The phone number, taken down by the secretary, Augeri says, was a Verizon cell phone number out of Southington, however, it was deactivated a month ago. Police are now investigating the possibility of a "spoof," or fake third-party number …

Middletown Police say Westlake Drive has seen a rash of Japanese motorcycle larcenies since Wednesday and locks are no hindrance to the suspects, who either cut them or take them with the ignition locked.
Four motorcycles have been stolen from Westlake Drive in the Westfield section of Middletown in the past two days, according to police, in an area where there are multiple apartment and condominium complexes. The suspects are either cutting the locks on the bikes or just picking the bike up with the lock intact, according to the report. Police ask residents to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles overnight, especially a van or box truck, which they believe is being used to transport the stolen motorcycles. Motorcycle owners, police advise, should store it in a locked garage. Anyone who has information regarding the stolen motorcycles or suspects is urged to call the Middletown Police at 860-344-3200.
