The Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was essentially disbanded after the American Revolutionary War. The United States Constitution, however, gave Congress the power "to provide and maintain a navy," and Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794 in order to re-establish a navy and protect American shipping from Barbary Coast pirates. America's Navy is unique in that it conducts missions on all fronts: in the air, on land and at sea. Recruiting offices for the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force are housed in the Armed Forces Career Center which is on the lower level of Middletown's Metro Square.
