Public Works is responsible for planning, engineering, building, snowplowing and maintaining roughly 200 miles of city roads in Middletown. It does much the same for 90 miles of sidewalks. The department also plants and preserves trees along city streets and issues construction and building permits for homes and businesses in Middletown. The Middletown Recycling Center (formerly known as the landfill) at Johnson and North Main streets is also under its purview; so is garbage collection and recycling for roughly 2,200 homes and businesses in downtown. The department also maintains all city-owned vehicles (except fire apparatuses).
