Obsession with: Ahi Tuna at Michael’s Deli- By Rina Kremer ’15

Find out about some of our favorite dishes at Michael's Deli!

Never been to Michael’s Deli on Broad Street in Middletown because you’re not a deli-meat kind of person? This isn’t just a “deli” meat kind of place! You might have already seen it in the Holiday Review a few weeks back, or the Full Review before that,  but in case you didn’t — this is what their sandwiches look like:

It’s not just a cold turkey-with-American-with-mayo-on-white (but, of course, they haven’t forgotten about you if you do like that!). It’s a grilled chicken pesto sandwich on onion foccaccia. Yes, that’s the kind of “deli” this is.

Amidst the long list of meaty sandwich choices lies a particular gem, the Ahi Tuna Salad. Wait, what? It seemed so out of place to me. I didn’t quite get it. So, I asked the owner, Chris (who you should talk to by the way because he’s wonderful), and he said that he likes to serve what he likes to eat, and Ahi Tuna is up there (I get that). And man, is that a good thing. If you like anything remotely close to fish — or maybe even if you don’t — you’ll like this. Instant obsession. Chris had it out for me in a matter of minutes, and it was still warm when it got to the table. The homemade dressing was a not-too-thick creamy with small pieces of carrot and a ginger flavor base, which went effortlessly to complement and not outdo the tuna’s flavor or texture.

I could go on to describe it, or you could just look at it, because “ a picture says a thousand words.”

Or, it makes you real hungry.

This is definitely one of my first stops now that I’m back  in Middletown, and I highly suggest you do the same! I also need to try their cheesecake…have you had it yet?!
