An Ode to Quick Breads: Sugar Cookies from Michael's Deli

Sugar cookies are seldom memorable. Unlike chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin, which often get by based on their other ingredients, sugar cookies stand alone, resulting in a boring, bland, texture and flavorless number far too much of the time. Not at Michael's Deli on Broad Street in Middletown.

Chris Arena, owner of Michael's, has a real talent in the cookie oven. His chocolate chip is sublime, his peanut butter irresistable, and his oatmeal raisin everything an oatmeal raisin cookie should be, but as far as I'm concerned, the sugar cookie stands out above the rest.

The texture is ezquisite, the crunchy, sugar-topped outside is met with a chewy, melt-in-your-mouth interior. The majority of the flavor is created by the butter and salt content, with out the overload of sweet that is often present in other cookies.

Like all of Michael's other cookies, these guys are never less than 4.5 ounces, and try as you might to resist temptation, it's nearly impossible to put it down after only a few bites.

Regardless of your previous notions about sugar cookies, try the one at Michael's Deli.
