The family had a blast today at the Portland Fair — amusement rides, candy apples and fried dough with homemade marinara sauce for the kids.
We loved Lucky Bob's magic/juggling show — it even got a couple chortles out of my 16-year-old son, which, you know, it pretty darn impressive.
The Marvelous Mutts show — dogs who caught flying discs (can't say Fri$bee$ for copyright infringement) three feet in the air and leapt into a huge pool of water and sped through an agility course. I've never seen anything like it — and the dogs are all rescued from shelters across the United States.
The fun continues Sunday with a talent contest at 11 a.m., Gunsmoke at 1 p.m. and the Big Six at 3:30 p.m. There's a pie-eating contest at 11 a.m., Lucky Bob the magician at 1 and 3 p.m., Late for Dinner at 1 p.m. and Faith Ziegler at 4 p.m.
One note — unless you are a vendor or entertainer, you MUST take the shuttle off Portland-Cobalt Road (Route 66). We made the mistake of trying to park at the fairgrounds and had to double back. There are bright yellow signs directing drivers to the proper area and buses run constantly so we didn't have a wait at all.
