Cukes Coming Out Your Ears? Drowning in Tomatoes? Donate Them to Hungry!

Middletown's Amazing Grace Food Pantry asks home gardeners to consider bringing their extra vegetables and fruits as nutritious donations to supplement dried goods offered to its patrons.

We surely have been experiencing the "dog days" of summer for the past several weeks. Not much thrives with this hot, sticky weather except the backyard gardens that so many people take tremendous pride in having.

The harvests that aren't at their peak now soon will be. Even a moderate size family with several prolific tomato, green bean or basil plants can only consume so many of these ripe, vegetables and herbs fruits before they become overwhelming.

Nothing is more appetizing and nutritious than fresh vegetables and fruits. Unfortunately, even in their peak season, they are expensive at the store or farm stand. Finding a home for the bounty of fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables can be a challenge. How many bags full of squash, tomatoes, and sweet corn can your friends or work colleagues use?

A wonderful way to use the extra bounty of these home garden sis to donate the food to Amazing Grace Food Pantry. When shoppers there see that there are fresh fruits or vegetables available, they are thrilled. Being able to prepare meals and provide snacks for children with fresh food is a treat that they usually can't afford.

Your donation of your garden's bounty will bring many smiles of appreciation, and good nutrition to our shoppers. is located at 16 Stack Street in Middletown.
