Altrusa Lending Library Open to Readers

The Little Free Library has books for the community to take and read which can be returned or passed on to a friend or family member.



Altrusa International of Central Connecticut launched their newest literacy project for Middletown Community with the first Altrusa Little Free Library at the , 654 Main Street.

The library was unveiled on Feb. 29 by Altrusa club members and Izzi Greenberg, executive director of the North End Action Team.

Altrusa will continue to bring books to the community. The free library is a non-profit organization seeking support of local service organizations. The mission is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. Literacy is an area of focus for Altrusa with an emphasis on "literacy for all ages."

The Little Free Library has books for the community to take and read which can be returned or passed on to a friend or family member. The main focus of this project, the firt in Connecticut, is to get the community reading. It will provide popular novels to young adults age 16 and older. Altrusa will maintain the library through book donations from the community and plans to add additional libraries in the sourrounding community.

Altrusa International of Central CT has worked in the Middletown and surrounding communities for more than 55 years. Altrusa International is a not-for-profit international association of professional women and men who volunteer their energies and expertise in projects dedicated to community betterment. Ongoing special focus: Literacy, the environment, HIV/AIDS.

Projects include: Altrusa Books for Community, a high school scholarship, Middlesex Community College Scholarship, Gerard F. Melito Senior Citizens Poetry Contest, Make A Difference Day — Jane Tarca Womans Health Awareness Day and Remembering our Woman Veterans, Hungry Babies are a Reality year-round baby food and diaper drive.
