Xavier Senior Laurence Hill to Play Ball at Fairfield University

At Xavier, Middletown's Catholic high school for boys, Hill, a baseball star, also played freshman football and was elected as a homeroom representative to the Student Activities Council.

This week, a starter on Xavier High School's baseball squad since sophomore year signed a letter of intent to play at Fairfield University next year.

Larry and Melissa Hill, parents of Laurence Hill of Durham, came to Xavier in Middletown to join their son, his baseball coach and members of the administration to complete the paperwork necessary for Laurence to officially submit his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Fairfield University next year.

The event took place during the first day of the early signing period for baseball and a number of other sports.

"He started as a sophomore at second base. Last season, as a junior, he played left field," said Coach Richard Magner. "He had four multiple hit games last year as a leadoff batter. He scored 19 runs and had seven stolen bases.”

Magner also said that this coming spring Laurence, “will be counted on to lead the team offensively and his leadership will be very important as we will have many younger players on the team.”

Laurence is a 6-foot middle infielder that possesses great athleticism, a strong arm, and speed. Over the past seven summers, He has been a shortstop / catcher for the Connecticut Bombers Baseball organization under the direction of Bob Turcio.  

He has been invited to play in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the Torrington Titans after his high school graduation and is looking forward to playing for Coach Bill Currier’s Fairfield University Stags.

The Fairfield Stags are an NCAA Division I school and play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The 2011-12 academic year marked Bill Currier’s first as head coach of the Fairfield University baseball team. It was a year in which he guided the Stags to a program-record 27 victories and to their first MAAC Championship berth in 12 years.
