Xavier High School Senior Signs With Sacred Heart University Sports

Senior Greg Onofri has committed to the Pioneers lacrosse program after he graduates from the Middletown Catholic high school in May.

The Onofri family came to Xavier High School in Middletown from their Hebron home to join Xavier senior Greg, his lacrosse coach and members of the administration to complete the paperwork necessary for Greg to officially submit his National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at Sacred Heart University next year.

Wednesday will mark the end of the early signing period for lacrosse and a number of other sports.

Greg is 6-foot-1, 175-pound longstick midfielder who provides athleticism and aggressiveness from the  position as well as strong ability in the faceoff X. At Xavier Greg also played football and was a diver on the swim team. He enjoys snow skiing as well as long boarding and dirt biking. Summers, he has played lacrosse for the Progression Hurricanes coached by Daryl Delia.

Greg made a verbal commitment to Sacred Heart in July shortly after Coach Jon Basti took the head coaching position. Sacred Heart Executive Director of Athletics Bobby Valentine announced this summer that Jonathan Basti has been named the Pioneers' new head men's lacrosse coach. Basti comes to Sacred Heart after serving as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Hartford for the last five seasons.

The Sacred Heart Pioneers are a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and a full member of the Northeast Conference.

The Pioneers men's lacrosse team is in a rebuilding mode coming off a 3-11 season last spring.

Speaking about his early recruiting activities, Coach Basti said, "We're very excited about our freshmen this year.

"They've already brought a lot to the table and they'll play a big part in everything that we're trying to do going forward with the program. We're thrilled about their enthusiasm and youthful exuberance that they have brought to the team."
