The Swede Smell of Success

Fredrik Jacobson captures first PGA Tour title with 1-stroke victory in Travelers Championship.

Fredrik Jacobson said he didn't know he was leading the Travelers Championship until after he hit his approach shot to the 18th green Sunday.

"I figured somebody was either tied or ahead of me - I didn't know," he said. "I just tried to keep hitting shots, and I figured after the second shot on 18 I was going to look."

In the group ahead of Jacobson, Ryan Moore narrowly missed saving par on 18 after a bunker shot. That bogey dropped Moore to 19-under-par, one stroke behind Jacobson.

"After my second shot is when I asked my caddie if we were in the lead or if we were tied, and he said Ryan just made a bogey. We've got a one-shot lead. But that was only after the second shot that I wanted to know," Jacobson said.

With his ball 13 feet from the cup, and knowing he had two putts to win the tournament, Jacobson rolled his first putt to within two inches. He then tapped in to secure his first victory on the PGA Tour.

Jacobson became the seventh Swedish-born player to win on tour. In doing so, he earned the top prize of $1.08 million, and moved up to 18th place in the FedExCup standings.

"It means a great deal," Jacobson said. "I came over in 2003 after having won in Europe, and I had my eyes on the U.S. tour. Obviously after winning a couple of times that year, I felt pretty good about winning, and I didn't know it was going to take this long before I won one. But whoever waits for a long time, it's all the sweeter when it comes together."

The 36-year-old made just one bogey in posting rounds of 65-66-63-66. He began the day with a one-stroke advantage over Bryce Molder, but had to withstand challenges from Moore and John Rollins, who each fired a final-round 63 to finish at 19-under.

A birdie at the par-3 16th put Moore into a tie with Jacobson at 20-under, but he pushed his tee shot into a fairway bunker on 18, then his approach wound up in another bunker to the right of the green. He nearly holed that sand shot, stopping about four and a half feet from the pin, but his par putt just slid by the cup.

"That 18th hole is going to sting a little bit," Moore said. "Just put it in a bad place off the tee and maybe a little too aggressive with my second shot. Honestly, hit a pretty darn good bunker shot, almost made it, then really hit my first bad putt of the day. It was just a pretty simple left center putt, and I pushed it right in the middle of the hole and it just topped out that left side. I could be certainly frustrated right now, but I just shot a 64-63 Saturday-Sunday. That's not that bad."
