Golf might not be on most people's minds this week, but the

Middletown's YMCA is holding a raffle to win a trip for four to the 2011

Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga. Net proceeds from the raffle,

valued at $23,000, will cover unfunded

financial assistance for low-income kids attending

YMCA Camp Ingersoll in Portland.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for $100 each. Winners will stay in a private home Wednesday through Saturday night and get a round of golf at an

Augusta area club and tickets to the Masters from Thursday to the Sunday

(the hardest ticket in sport!). The drawing will be at the YMCA

on Jan. 3, 2011. The winner need not be present. To purchase a ticket,

The weather has been perfect for outdoor skating recently. There are

numerous suitable ponds in Middletown, although the Middletown

Department of Parks and Recreation officially permits skating (weather

and ice permitting) at the following places:

-- Butternut Hollow (near Butternut and Thomas Streets). Lights are provided until 9 p.m.

-- Swales Pond (Next to Snow school on Wadsworth Street)

-- Ravine Park (At High and Beach streets)

The Park and Rec department notes that supervision is not provided and

skating is at your own risk.

A spokesman for the department said the thickness of the ice is being tested today (Dec. 21, 2010). Check conditions by calling the department and getting a report: 860-344-3552.
