Middletown Residents Top Finishers in Citizens Bank 5K Run

Rob Weston of Middletown was the top male finisher for the second year in a row and Middletown High School Class of 2013 graduate Lauren Hodge was the first female Middletown finisher.

A rain shower Wednesday afternoon didn't prevent more than 450 runners from taking part in the annual Citizens Bank 5K Summer Fun Run which wended its way through city streets and the Wesleyan University campus.

Old Saybrook resident Bridgid Selfors was the top female finisher with a time of 19:00, while Middletown High School graduate Rob Weston of Middletown was the top male finisher for the second year in a row with a time of 16:54. MHS Class of 2013 graduate Lauren Hodge was the first female Middletown finisher.

Last month, Weston won the BlumShapiro 5K For Charity at the Travelers Championship with a race time of 16:44.

This year's corporate team winner and recipient of the Corporate Team Challenge Cup was Pratt & Whitney.

A family-oriented festival and road race, this annual event attracts hundreds of spectators and participants into downtown Middletown, including more than 40 Citizens Bank colleagues who volunteer to distribute water and register runners.

Race participants were encouraged to bring new school supplies to support Citizens Bank’s Gear for Grades program, which ensures children start the school year off with the items they need to succeed, like notebooks, pencils, folders and rulers.

More than 200 donations were collected and will be stuffed in logo-free backpacks for children of the CT Association of Foster and Adoptive Parents, as well as the YMCA.
