Mercy High Girls Basketball Ranked No. 1

Match-up with Career High ought to be interesting

Xavier High has a riflery team that competes at the Blue Trail Range in Wallingford. They opened up the season last Wednesday, beating Avon Old Farms by a score of 951-881. Leading the way for the Falcons were senior Tom Rinaldo, junior Jim Stanley (top score of 197 out of 200) and sophomore Rider Doolittle.

Every two years, the Central Connecticut Conference realigns its football divisions based on success of each team over the past two seasons. In 2011 and 2012, the CCC will have three divisions – LL, L and M/S. Also, each division will split into East and West subdivisions.

Middletown High will now be in the Class L West Division. Here are all the reclassifications:

East: Glastonbury, East Hartford, Manchester, Newington, South Windsor

West: Conard, Hall, New Britain, Southington, Simsbury

Class L

East: Bulkeley, E.O. Smith, Fermi, Hartford Public, RHAM, Wethersfield

West: Bristol Central, Bristol Eastern, Maloney, Middletown, Windsor

Class M/S

East: Berlin (M), Plainville (M), Platt (M) Rockville (L), Tolland (M),

West: Bloomfield (S), East Catholic (S), Northwest Catholic (S), Rocky Hill (S), Weaver (S)

THREE

Vinal Tech senior Zack Askew was named the MVP of the Tip-Off Tournament at Eastern Conn. State after scoring 32 points as the Hawks beat Windham Tech, 81-76, to win the tournament. Joining Askew on the All-Tourney team was Zach Cloutier.

TWO

The Xavier boy’s basketball team is ranked No. 10 in the Courant’s Connecticut River valley area. The Falcons are 6-2, with Mike Boornazian leading the way after scoring 35 points against West Haven High and 22 against Hamden High.

 ONE

With its 9-1 record, the Mercy High girl’s basketball team continues its hold on the No. 1 spot in the state of Connecticut, according to the New Haven Register Top 10. Tuesday night’s matchup against No. 4-ranked Career High school will be one of the top regular-season games of the year.
