Studies Put on Hold for Fun and Games

Macdonough Elementary students spend the morning outdoors for field day— a reward for a hard year's work.

Those who shunned physical activity on the second day of a heat wave Wednesday could have taken inspiration from the more than 200 Macdonough Elementary School students who eagerly took part in relay races, Frisbee and bean bag competitions at the highly anticipated — and well-earned — field day.

Teachers, staff and parents ran individual activity stations, many involving water, naturally, on 92-degree day, but kids didn't seem to mind the heat a whit. The watermelon slices were aplenty, as were the shouts, guffaws and whoops of joy.

During breaks at cooling stations, students refilled their water bottles — and refueled their energy underneath a handmade shower: atop a step ladder, staff had positioned a garden hose which sent a fine shower of cool water over laughing groups of children.
