New School Principals to Start Working in December

Melissa Barbuto, now assistant principal at Hamden High School, will take over Wesley Elementary, and Thomas Cannata, Plainville Schools' math and science leader, will come to Lawrence Elementary.

The two new school principals hired this month to lead Lawrence and Wesley elementary schools will begin their jobs in December.

Melissa Barbuto, the new head of Lawrence, will start in Middletown on Dec. 1 and Tom Cannata, the new school chief at Wesley, is scheduled to begin Dec. 19, said Marcy Poppel, Board of Education secretary.

Interim principals have run both schools since August. The education board announced last week the new appointments.

Both candidates come highly recommended by their sending districts and from the Middletown Principal Search Committee, Dr. Gene Nocera says.

Barbuto has been the assistant principal of Hamden High School since 2010.  Before that, she taught kindergarten, and grades one and four from 2002 to 2010.
