Mercy Students win COLT Awards

On April 26, the Connecticut Organization of Language Teachers held its annual Poetry Recitation Contest at Bristol Eastern High School.

 

student Tara Palnitkar, daughter of Raju and Denise Palnitkar of Cromwell, won the Connecticut Organization of Language Teachers essay contest. Her essay on “Why Learn Another Language,” supported her desire to study French during her high school years along with factual information on the number of languages spoken throughout the world versus the number of countries that cite English as their official language. 

Tara is a student of Rob Hunt’s AP French 5 class and a member of the Class of 2012.

On April 26, COLT held its annual Poetry Recitation Contest at Bristol Eastern High School. In all, 74 schools from the state competed, sending over 700 students. Mercy High School had eight students who competed in Latin, French, and Italian. The girls selected their poems and worked at memorizing and practicing them with their teachers as coaches. Awards are given to the top three students in each division; bronze, silver and gold. 

Mercy High School had two medal winners, Dinah Lensing-Sharp, Class of 2012, won the gold medal in advanced French, levels 5 & 6 combined. Dinah is the daughter of Dr. C. Sharp and Dr. Leo Lensing of Middletown. Courtney Perales, Class of 2013, earned a bronze award in Latin 3.
