First Wes EarthFest Draws Crowd

Earth Day celebration to benefit CT Fund for the Environment features recycling, environmental awareness booths, live student bands, gently used clothing sales and tee silk screenings.

Students swayed to the rhythms of live reggae Friday afternoon as Wesleyan University debuted its first EarthFest at the foot of Foss Hill.

The event was organized by Alissa Santucci, 20, and Corey Guilmette, '13, as campus environmental groups, student musicians and others gathered in celebration of Earth Day.

Michelle Agresti, '14, and Elizabeth Deatrick, '14, jovially passed out improvised plant containers and basil seeds to eager students — all the while urging them to recycle their empty yogurt containers, used-up pens and pencils, cookie tins and juice and water bottles at WesShop and Summerfields on campus.

Guilmette said mostly everything came together without a hitch — save for the sound system. But that was quickly resolved and the first student band, Men With Bad Manners, took the stage with a slow reggae tune.

Wesleyan Farmers Market organizers Danny O'Donnell, '14, and Olivia May, '14, offered warm, just-blended samples of almond-walnut butter on slices of banana or apple.

The event ran from 3-6 p.m. and proceeds from the gently used clothing sale and silk-screened T-shirts benefitted the CT Fund for the Environment.
