Free Office Training Programs Begin May 1

Kelly Smith, chairman of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, has announced the inception of an all new training program for members of the county’s workforce:  The 21st Century Office Training and Advanced Office Training programs.

These programs, free to the public, are designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills to compete in today’s demanding workforce and to increase productivity while at work. These skills will be provided by a comprehensive and challenging course schedule, which will improve students’ technical proficiencies with software applications, the internet, as well as written communication.

The 21st Century Office Training program will begin with a mandatory orientation session on May 1, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the Middlesex Chamber in Middletown.

The course offerings and descriptions are as follows:

Mastering Word Processing - 6 Hours
A training program in word processing concepts, technology, and application as related to job skill requirements and career opportunities. Training time will be divided between lecture and lab work. Each individual will complete a resume.

Creative/Persuasive Business Writing - 8 hours
This class will be an intensive review of English mechanics to produce accurate, professional business documents in Microsoft Word. There will be an emphasis on sentence structure, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and proofreading for content and clarity.

Resume Preparation/Career Counseling - 10 hours
Using several career assessment tools (including Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory), participants will analyze their personality type and career interest so they may pursue an employment environment which will utilize their strengths. Also included will be resume writing and effective interview practices.

Intermediate Excel  - 12 hours
Participants will learn how to maximize their use of Excel in this hands-on class. Advanced features will be covered, including grouping information, sorting data, creating charts and graphs to display data.

Microsoft Access 101 - 12 hours
For the beginning database user! In this hands-on course, students will learn the basics of designing the database structure, adding records, querying the database, designing forms and creating and printing reports. Familiarity with Windows required.

Microsoft PowerPoint 101   - 8 hours
This class will explore components of PowerPoint.  PowerPoint is used to create professional slide presentations and handouts for business and community meetings. Participants will gain the skills to plan, create, view and run a presentation using text and graphics.  Familiarity with Windows required.

Social Media in Business   - 6 hours
This class will explore various types of social media and how this applies to the workplace. A focus will be made on how to use these applications as a marketing tool.
