Board of Ed Eliminates Biz Manager Position

The last day of work for Middletown Board of Education business manager Nancy Haynes, who has held the position since July of 2009, will be June 30.

The board of education voted 8 to 1 to eliminate the central office at Tuesday’s meeting.

The last day of work for Middletown Board of Education business manager , who has held the position since July of 2009, will be June 30, according to chair Eugene Nocera.

The only opposing vote was that of former chair Ted Razcka, who Nocera said voted against the action because he wanted to extend it a little further, “but we didn’t think that was a wise plan,” Nocera said.

Haynes came under fire in February after a board of education budget audit revealed a deficit of $1,059,000 million.

“We have been working on this issue for a very long time,” Nocera acknowledged. “The board decided to honor the labor board’s decision and direct the interim superintendent [David Larson] to help us with a reorganization plan.”

"The board had to take the action," Larson said, after the ruling in August of last year.

Haynes could not be reached by phone for comment Wednesday.

Councilwoman Deborah Kleckowski, an of former and — who both vacated their positions earlier this year — and Haynes, said the board of education should have been more aggressive in its decision.

“I believe she should be let go immediately,” Kleckowski said. “Given the fact that the $1 million is still unfound … and the overall gross mismanagement of the board of education [under the previous administration] … and her overall management style.”

In February, central office posted the job opening for for the school board, which is entirely separate from the Middletown Public Schools position held now by Haynes.
