Sens. Doyle, Bartolomeo, Reps. Serra, Lesser Affirm Gun Control Bill

On Wednesday night, the state Senate and House passed sweeping gun control legislation crafted in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

SB 1160 passed on a 26-10 vote. State Sens. Dante Bartolomeo, D-13, and Paul R. Doyle, D-9th, approved the legislation, which was signed by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy at noon Thursday. State Reps. Matthew Lesser, D-100, and Joseph Serra, D-33rd, voted yes on the House Bill which passed 105 to 44, with 2 absent.

Lesser wrote on his Facebook page: "Bill passes 105-44, with broad bipartisan support. I voted in the affirmative. There is no cheering. This is not a celebration. There are good representatives who voted for this bill, and good representatives who voted no. This isn't an easy issue, this is a sad issue, one we wish we hadn't to be dealing with."

The bill will expand the state's assault weapons ban, ban new sales of high-capacity magazines and require owners who already have them to register them with the state, as well as require long gun and ammunition purchasers to carry an eligibility certificate. It also addresses mental health and school security standards.
