Report: Parents Sentenced For 'Starving' Five Children

A 5-month-old child, so severely malnourished that it appeared the size of a newborn, was among the five children found by Middletown officers April 15, 2011, at their home, living in squalid conditions, according to police.

A city mother and father were sentenced Wednesday in Middletown Superior Court for “neglecting and starving” their five children, leaving “the two youngest close to death,” according to a report in the Middletown Press.

Andrew Meeks, 25, and , 25, formerly of 71 Berlin St., pleaded guilty to five counts each of risk of injury to a minor in April, the Press reports. Their cases were continued until Wednesday for a 10-week presentencing investigation.

“This is something that in the years I’ve been here, every once in a while, we get a case this severe,” Middletown Police Lt. Heather Desmond said last June. “This is probably one of the worst-case scenarios and I think the officer who acted probably saved the 5-month-old’s life.”

Andrew was sentenced to seven years suspended after one year to serve and five years probation. Jessie was sentenced to five years suspended after two years to serve and five years probation. The parental rights of both have been terminated, according to the Press.
