Middletown Shelter Visitors Drop

Emergency Management says there's no wait for showers and the place is 'emptying out.' Still, the powerless are getting angry.

Just over a quarter of Middletown households are in the midst of a fifth day without electricity Thursday — 27 percent of CL&P customers and the city's emergency operations department says numbers at the high school shelter are dwindling.

In fact, Deputy Fire Chief Robert Kronenberger, reports as of 11 a.m., 131 residents had checked into the shelter and there's no wait for a hot shower.

And some of the 6,178 who remain in the dark are getting riled up.

From Middletown Patch's Facebook page:

  • I am supportive of the hard work the crews are putting fourth but a little ticked at the lack if funds to send out more crews.
  • I lived for many years in the Westfield section of Middletown, am now in Rocky Hill. Today we saw trucks from Florida and Quebec Canada, it's good to know people are getting the help they need. CL&P laid off a lot of people, they need to hire and train more. Being without power for 4-5 days like we had been is unacceptable.
  • Long Lane is still out. Hope we aren't one of the last to get restored as we were with Irene!
  • Lisa Lane still out.....we were one of the last to get restored with Irene, also.
  • East Ridge Rd still out.
  • Ten Acre, off Ridgewood, still out, also one of the last with Irene, I know Millbrook is also still out, just seems strange that with all of these outages CL&P are reporting Middletown at 27% out, seems a little higher if you ask me, Hmmm.
  • Hemlock Place still out — since Saturday early afternoon!

Donna Duda, who lives at Fernwoods Apartments on Camp Street, has been staying at her daughter's apartment in the same complex with her two young grandchildren.

"I've got no heat, no hot water, no food, running out of clothes ... I'm mean, I'm nasty, I'm sick of this."

"Our apartment is 52 degrees," Duda said. "Others's are in the 40s. We need help."

Middletown Public Schools and the Russell Library are closed. Middlesex Community College is closed Thursday, but classes resume Friday.

Middletown Area Transit is still offering free bus rides to the shelter, which is offering showers, food, a heated room and electricity for charging. Call (860) 346-0212 for times and routes; they will send out a special bus in some cases.
