Council OKs Soccer Field Lease, Open Space Purchase

Middletown youth league scores a goal with a 25-year agreement to use city fields on Country Club Road.

In a win for Middletown Youth Soccer, the Common Council on Tuesday approved a 25-year lease with the league to continue using city-owned fields on Country Club Road.

The decision saw Democrats joining Republicans in the near-unanimous vote that will allow the organization to make use of grants for field upgrades. The council also OK'd the purchase of the 22-acre Jablonski property on Country Club Road for $331,500 and confirmed Joseph M. Kronenberger as the new Deputy Director of Communications.

“I am very happy to see that Joe has progressed up through the department,” Minority leader Philip J. Pessina said. “And I have, personally in knowing the work that Joe has done, the utmost confidence that [he] will do a great job.”

In other business, the council praised members of the Mercy High Mock Trial Team for its recent victory at the Connecticut Supreme Court against Stamford's Westhill High School.

The council meeting began on a light note with the designation of downtown Middletown as most “Romantic Main Street.” Community Health Center CEO Mark Masselli, appearing before the council to announce his retirement as head of the Housing Authority, was upbeat about the designation, saying he first “wooed” his wife, Jen Alexander, in the city's vibrant downtown.Show us some love!
