Community Health Center Gets $238K Federal Grant

CHC, based in Middletown, will use the funds to help enroll uninsured Americans in new health coverage options made available by the Affordable Care Act.

The Community Health Center will receive a $238,366 federal grant to help those uninsured individuals take advantage of Affordable Care Act benefits. 

On Wednesday, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced that $574,877 in grants have been awarded to four community health centers in South Central Connecticut to enroll uninsured Americans in new health coverage options made available by the Affordable Care Act.  

With these funds, health centers are expected to hire additional outreach and eligibility assistance workers to assist millions of people nationwide with enrollment into affordable health coverage.

The Community Health Center, based in Middletown, has 13 locations throughout the state, School-Based Health Centers and Mobile Dental Sites.

“This is yet another example of the Affordable Care Act helping ensure access to affordable, quality health insurance. We all know that selecting and enrolling in a new health care plan can be complicated and, with these grants, our outstanding community health centers will now have one more resource to help people pick the best insurance for themselves and their families.”

These awards will support staff who will work with consumers to navigate their coverage options through the new Health Insurance Marketplace, Access Health CT. They will also help determine an individual’s eligibility for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program; any financial help they may be eligible for; and enroll them in new affordable health coverage options. 

In September 2012, CHC awarded a $250,000 grant from Aetna to conduct a two-year study aimed at improving the coordination of health care for low-income and underinsured patients at community health care clinics and similar safety-net health care providers.

In December 2011, the CHC was awarded $430,000 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help school-based health centers expand, including Macdonough Elementary's in Middletown.

In December 2010, the Danbury CHC received a $250,000 two-year grant from the GE Foundation to expand behavioral health care services to children.

In November 2010, CHC received a $453,000 grant to support a study of the VA Stepped Care Model for Pain Management in health centers from the Mayday Fund.

In October 2010, it received a $7 million federal grant to help fund its $17 million new location on the corner of Grand and Main Streets. In July 2010, CHC received $2.5 million from the State Bond Commission.
