Bass Championship Tournament Coming to Middletown

Mayor Drew says the city's $5,000 investment in the event will mean $150,000 will be spent in Middletown by participants and spectators during the sport fishing's duration.

Middletown will host the prestigious Bass Federation Eastern Division Championship fishing tournament next September on the Connecticut River in Middletown and Haddam, according to Mayor Daniel T. Drew.

The city and Downtown Business District are jointly hosting the tournament, which is expected to draw hundreds of people to the city. The tournament will have a significant economic impact on the tourism industry and local economy via tournament participants, sponsors, staff and guests, Drew says. It is estimated that the city’s $5,000 investment in the tournament will result in approximately $150,000 in direct spending during the event's four days.

Drew says, “Downtown Middletown is an ideal location for the tournament with a first-class hotel, a wide variety of family-friendly dining and entertainment venues. Middletown is known as a friendly city where family activities are valued. Fishing is a great way for parents and children to bond and learn a lifelong skill.”

“The tournament is just the kind of family event we are looking for to shine a spotlight on Middletown’s riverfront," Drew says. "This will bring a unique and different visitor to the City from the entire northeastern region.”

The Bass Federation and their member clubs conduct more than 20,000 fishing youth and conservation events at the local level each year. They have provided a foundation for the entire bass fishing industry for more then 40 years.

Drew says the tournament will showcase Middletown in the national media. “By hosting the tournament, the city of Middletown will be exposed online to the 25,000 member base Bass Federation, Inc. website, www.bassfederation.com which has 50,000 monthly hits and more than 100,000 hits on www.flwoutdoors.com. Additionally, the tournament will highlight the city in the state and national media.”

The tournament, which runs Sept. 10-13, 2013, is sponsored by Cabella’s, Ranger boats and Chevy Trucks.
