Westfield Fire $1.3M Budget Passes Unanimously

The mill rate in this section of Middletown will increase from 1.179 to 1.237 over last year.

Middletown's $1.3 million budget passed Tuesday evening in an unanimous 33-0 vote, according to Ross Andrew, who has been chair of the Westfield Fire Commission for some 30 years.

"We usually get between 50-90 people at these votes," he said earlier in the day, though this year turnout at the vote was much less. He estimates more than 10,000 households in the district.

The mill rate now increases from 1.179 to 1.237, or a 4.9 percent increase, over last year. That, Andrew said, is due to the loss of the Aetna Corporation, excluding the data center, which still remains.

There are three firefighters in the district and the rest are volunteers, with one full-time and two part-time administrative positions.
