Wesleyan Fires Two Officers Accused of Videotaping Student

Officials at Wesleyan University have fired two security officers that the college administrators say are suspected of secretly videotaping a female student.

In an email to students and staff on Tuesday, Michael Whaley, Wesleyan's vice president for student affairs, and Sonia Mañjon, vice president for institutional partnerships and the college's chief diversity officer, said the incident is being investigated by Middletown police.

"We are all distressed by this shocking incident. Please remember that there are resources in both our offices should you wish to talk about this further," the two said in the email, which was reprinted on the student blog Weslying.

The email does not say when the incident occurred, but says the two security officers' behavior "involved the surreptitious viewing and possibly the video recording of a female student in her residence. The violation of a student’s private life by those charged with protecting our students is an intolerable breach of trust. Wesleyan immediately terminated both officers and is cooperating with Middletown police in an ongoing investigation. Police and staff from Student Affairs have been in contact with the victim and are offering support."
