Water Main Break Shuts Down Court Street at Main

Workers repairing the sidewalk on Court Street struck a water main early Thursday, leaving businesses on the street without running water for the morning.

An early-morning water main break on Court Street in Middletown forced officals to shut down the roadway at Main and Broad, leaving businesses on the street without running water.

When owner Yvette Elliott came in Friday at 6 a.m., workers on scene told her she'd be without water for two to three hours. Construction crews accidentally hit a water main just before 2 a.m. near the coffee shop.

Close to a million gallons of water were lost overnight, NBC Connecticut is reporting.

Just before 10 a.m., Elliott said, the fire hydrant was being flushed and she had "a little more faith" that the water main would be soon "up and running."

Baristas have been able to keep the coffee flowing all morning for customers, Elliott said, because staff brought in water.

Middletown water officials believe the 8-inch main dates back to the 1890s, according to NBC Connecticut.
