Warrant: Ex-Wesleyan Security Guards Accused of Voyeurism Watched Student for Year

A Middletown Police investigation into the videotaping of an unclothed female student in her dorm room reveals graphic texts between Richard Hodge and Michael Anderson.

The arrest warrant for two former Wesleyan University security guards charged with voyeurism says the men watched, photographed and videotaped at least one female student in various states of undress.

In late April, Wesleyan administrators emailed students and staff, alerting them of the incident and saying the security guards, later identified by Middletown Police as Richard Hodge and Michael Anderson, had been immediately terminated as employees. "We are all distressed by this shocking incident," the email said.

On July 16, Middletown Police announced the two had been arrested. Hodge, 35, of Franklin Avenue, Hartford, was charged with two counts of voyeuristic recording of another person and disseminating voyeuristic material. Anderson, 34, of Inverness Lane, Middletown, was charged with disseminating voyeuristic material.

On April 8 at 9:08 p.m., Hodge's wife told detectives she found a 25-minute video on her husband's cell phone that showed a sometimes naked female Wesleyan student returned to her dorm room after a shower, according to the affidavit, and looked to be filmed from a darkened room in a building across from hers.

The report says Hodge told his wife he and Anderson regularly recorded students "in different states of undress," according to the report, and when interviewed, Hodge told officers he videotaped an 8-second video of the victim with his iPhone but didn't derive sexual gratification while watching it.

Hodge admitted to another occasion of taping the same student, the arrest warrant says, then said he learned of the location from Anderson, who said Hodge sent him a couple videos or photographs of the victim. Officers seized text messages between the two men, from March 2012 to March 2013, that contain vulgar references to female Wesleyan students and indication that both men watched women throughout campus.

According to the affidavit, several pornographic images were found on Anderson's phone and Hodge's wife said she kicked him out of their apartment after he admitted to watching the Wesleyan student for a year.

This isn't the first such incident of voyeurism at Wesleyan.

In February, Michael T. McKenna, 30, of West Hartford was charged with the crime after filming a female student with a camera while she used the restroom. He faces third-degree criminal trespass, breach of peace and voyeurism charges, the latter being a felony. McKenna is due back in court Sept. 4.

On Sept. 11, 2012, Robert Cristian Rotaru, 19, of Jackson Road, Higganum, took four pictures of another Wesleyan student from under her shower stall in a co-ed dorm. He's charged with voyeurism and voyeuristic recording of another person and is due back in court Dec. 17.

Meanwhile, Hodge's and Anderson's cases have been continued to Sept. 6 in Middletown Superior Court.
