Unused Meds? Dispose of Them Safely at Saturday's Drug Take-Back Day

Middletown Police will be collecting prescriptions as part of the federal Drug Enforcement Agency's plan to prevent the abuse of prescription pain relievers and other items.

The Middletown Police Department will be participating in the DEA Drug Take back program on Saturday — this time at a new location.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CVS, 308 Main Street Extension, in Middletown.

Citizens may drop off any unused prescription drugs to be properly destroyed.

On April 27, 371 tons of prescription medications were collected from members of the public at more than 5,829 locations manned by 4,312 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies that partnered with DEA on the event.  

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, twice as many Americans regularly abused prescription drugs than the number of those who regularly used cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined.   

That same study revealed more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription pain relievers got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet.
