Police: 20 Charged in September Drug Sweep

Middletown Police are concentrating their efforts on "cleaning up" the North End and expect to conduct more arrests shortly.

Twenty Middletown residents, including one juvenile, were charged with a host of narcotics sales and related offenses last week in a massive, targeted cleanup of the city's North End, according to police.

On Sept. 26, the Middletown's street crime unit and the members of the Middlesex state’s attorney's office led a large warrant-serving raid in the North End.

From June through September, street crime officers heard complaints from North End residents about street-level drug dealers who were targets of this warrant sweep, according to the report. Police targeted 16 individuals, obtaining 24 narcotics warrants.

Police say additional arrests are expected.

"This was a proactive, cooperative effort by all involved and it shows the conviction of the police department to make this community a safer place to live," Mayor Dan Drew says.

Chief William McKenna says his department has set a "goal to clean up the North End and restore the quality of life for all that live, work and travel through the north end. The North End has many great residents and very fine businesses that are in need of our attention right now."

"Northenders should have the same sense of security in their neighborhood as other parts of the city,” McKenna says.
