Police: Man Arrested After Threatening to Kill Mother's Husband

Officers say they found the husband naked in a Middletown home.

A 38-year-old Middletown man is facing misdemeanor charges after police say he threatened to kill his mother's husband following a prolonged, semi-public argument.

On Oct. 1, Middletown police were called to a home on Evergreen Avenue. A woman said her son, Matthew M. Donohue, 38, of Lakeside Avenue, was on his way over to “beat up” her husband over $20.

The report says police found the husband upstairs, pacing, saying, “I just want to be left alone … I had a bad past, I was a bad guy.”

The man was also naked.

The mother said Donohue was angry she didn’t give him money, according to the arrest report. Police called Donohue by phone to say not to come and he responded, the report details: “too bad, I’m already on my way.”

When told he would be arrested, the report says Donohue said, “will you let me get a few licks in first?” then hung up the phone after swearing at police. When officers talked to him by phone a second time, the Donohue heard the man yelling in the background, “yeah, come over if you’re stupid,” the report says.

The man left his house with a club wrapped with duct tape and a pillow, the report says, sat on his front porch and said, “you can leave now, officers, I’ll handle this.”

Donohue started walking down the street with his fists clenched as the man yelled at him from the porch. The report says Donohue yelled, “I’m not going anywhere, I’m going to break his neck.” As police handcuffed Donohue, he said, “this isn’t over. I’m going to kill him.”

Police say Donohue said the man is a heroin user who beats his mother.

The report says Donohue’s girlfriend started yelling in the street, then told officers, “[expletive] you. I won’t call the cops anymore. I’ll call someone who will actually do something.”

Donohue was arrested for second-degree threatening and breach of peace.
