PD: Man Trying to Steal $5,000 Mountain Bike Caught in Act by Victim

Middletown Police say the victim, who was leaving work, saw a 20-year-old Killingworth man taking his bicycle and the two fought for possession of it.

A 20-year-old Killingworth man is facing felony charges after Middletown Police say a man leaving work found him trying to steal his $5,000 mountain bike — and the victim wrestled with him to get it back.

On Aug. 21, a man walking to his car parked on James A. Moses Avenue witnessed Andrew Q. Doughtery, 20, of Buell Hill Road, Killingworth, trying to steal his Trek Gary Fisher bicycle, the report says, and a fight ensued.

Police say Dougherty tried to throw the bike over a fence, damaging it, after smashing the victim’s rear driver’s side window, causing $500 in damage. The report says bottles of alcohol and 5.2 grams of marijuana were found in Dougherty’s car along with a small glass smoking pipe.

He was charged with use of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than 4 ounces marijuana, illegal purchase of liquor, second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree larceny, and third-degree robbery.

Dougherty has two other court cases pending: from June 30 for possession of less than half-ounce cannabis and simple trespass and on June 21 for possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of less than half-ounce cannabis — not-guilty pleas have been entered for both, according to the Judicial Branch website.
