State police are searching for a man who was caught on camera last week breaking into a Durham convenience store and stealing 60 cartons of cigarettes.

According to police, at 2:22 a.m. on Dec. 11 a "heavy set white male" pulled up to the front of the Durham Exxon Mini Mart at 24 Main St. in a maroon van and was able to unlock the front door of the store, according to surveillance cameras capturing the incident.

He then went behind the counter and stole two full boxes of cigarettes, with each box containing 30 cartons. Each carton is valued at $85, and with a full 60 cartons stolen the total value equaled $5,100, police said.

The man then left the store and put the cigarettes in the side door of his van, police said. But when he returned to re-lock the front door of the mini mart the alarm system went off, the surveillance cameras showed.

Police arrived however the man had already left the store and the doors were locked when police checked them.

The store manager told police he did not recognize the van or the white male in the video, the police report stated.

Police said they are investigating the incident.
