A city man found intoxicated on the street after a breakup with his girlfriend was sent to detox then arrested later that night after breaking into his own apartment, according to Middletown Police.
On Sept. 16 at 7:56 p.m., police were called to a home about a break-in after the owner's son came home to find the windows open and doors broken at the first-floor apartment, according to the report, and he feared someone was inside.
Dispatch told officers about the resident, Robert Horn, 39, of Griffin Place, who earlier had been found drunk on Pearl Street, police say, necessitating he be sent to Middlesex Hospital for detoxification.
Horn had bloody hands at the time, police say. Horn's girlfriend told officers she suspected he had done it following an argument after which she kicked him out. A hammer with smeared blood on the handle was found inside, the report indicates, and Horn caused $700 worth of damage.
At the hospital, police say, Horn was indignant, insisting he didn't break in but out after he was locked inside but refused to answer any more questions.
He was charged with third-degree criminal mischief.
