A 39-year-old city man faces assault, reckless endangerment and related charges after Middletown Police say he hurled a shovel from his third-floor apartment, cutting open a woman's head.
On Aug. 7 at about 11 p.m., police were called to an apartment on Liberty Street about an assault, and arrived to find 15-20 people standing outside yelling about a person getting hit in the head with a garden shovel, according to the report.
A woman was sitting on the ground with a man holding a rag against her head, police say, and witnesses pointed to the side of the house. A search revealed a spade-tipped shovel lying on the ground, the report indicates, and a bystander told detectives that the suspect, Kirk J. Lisica, 39, of Liberty Street, whose known to police as "Duke," lives on the third floor.
Lisica came out of the house, sweating and saying he had been assaulted by a man, documents say, however a witness said Lisica hit a woman, then wouldn't say how she was injured and threw a shovel off his porch, hitting the female victim's daughter in the head. A witness corroborated the account, police say, adding Lisica threw the shovel like a "spear," hit the woman's head and "blood poured out" as the suspect showed "no remorse."
The victim was taken to Hartford Hospital where, the report indicates, she said Lisica had hit her mother, got mad at the accusation, then heard people yelling, "Kurt, no!" and Kurt, stop!" then felt pain in her head but couldn't remember much more.
In his jail cell, the document indicates, Lisica punched the doors and walls, threw his food around, urinated on the floor and broke a camera in the booking room by disassembling it.
According to the Connecticut Judicial website, Lisica has a number of convictions for assault, unlawful restraint, DUI and breach of peace from 2011; and another breach of peace from April of this year.
He was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, breach of peace, second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment.
