PD: Elderly Woman Hits Thief With Cane After He Steals $100

Middletown Police say a 23-year-old Cromwell man posing as a carpenter took cash from an elderly Middletown homeowner after her son allegedly attacked and robbed him.

Middletown Police say a Cromwell resident posing as a handyman stole $100 in cash from an elderly city woman. The suspect, police report, claimed the alleged theft was in retaliation for a confrontation involving her son.

On May 6, Thomas Zinc, 23, of Palmer Circle, Cromwell, showed up unannounced at a home on Reservoir Road in Middletown, telling the homeowner he was looking to paint the back deck, according to the police report.

The victim told officers Zinc let himself into the home, the report details, and was in a rush to leave after writing his phone number down on a pad next to a $100 bill on the counter.

According to the report, the elderly victim hit Zinc with her cane after accusing him of taking her $100.

The report says, “Zinc stated that the victim’s son, a half-blind cancer patient, choked him and stole $40 from him.” Zinc had no injuries, police say.

He was charged with sixth-degree larceny.
