PD: 2012 Middletown Shooting Suspect Found in South Carolina

Middletown Police say Rakeem Cunningham was on federal probation at the time of the crime and has a record of convictions.

A city man suspected in a November 2012 shooting on Flower Street was found by U.S. marshals in South Carolina, according to Middletown Police.

A report released Wednesday by Middletown Police says on Nov. 26, 2012, officers were called to Flower Street for the report of a disturbance that turned out to be a shooting. Several bullet casings were located at the scene, according to the report.

The victim was found at Middlesex Hospital with gunshot wounds to the left leg and multiple witnesses identified Rakeem Cunningham, 27, of East Main Street as the shooter, according to the report.

Cunningham was on federal probation at the time so his probation was revoked and he was named a fugitive so Middletown Police and U.S. marshals searched for him locally unsuccessfully, according to the report.

Police received a tip that Cunningham may be in South Carolina, and he was eventually located there by U.S. Marshals on Feb. 28.

Police say Cunningham was returned to Hartford, and after his arraignment, returned to federal custody and held without bond on federal violation of probation.

Cunningham was charged with: unlawful discharge of firearms, breach of peace, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, first-degree assault, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Cunningham has a record convictions, including a 2004 sale of hallucinogenics, carrying a pistol without a permit and first-degree failure to appear in Meriden and criminal trespass,  first-degree failure to appear and interfering with an officer from 2003, according to the Connecticut Judicial website.
