Court Grants Middletown Native, NFL Player Family Violence Ed

Upon successful completion of the program, charges will be dropped against Detroit Lions player Amari Spievey, who along with the mother of his daughter, were arrested after a March domestic violence incident.

NFL football player and Middletown resident Amari Spievey was granted a family violence education program in Middletown Superior Court Thursday, according to the Middletown Press.

The Detroit Lions player, 24, was arrested March 26 for third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child, and disorderly conduct for a domestic dispute in the Dove Lane home he shares with the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, LisaMarie Santos, 26, who was also arrested in a child support argument that turned physical.

The judge agreed to allow Spievey to attend counseling out of state in lieu of classes because of his job out of state, according to the Press.

Santos was also charged with risk of injury and disorderly conduct for her alleged involvement in the dispute. She was also granted the family violence education program, according to court records, and her case was continued to June 28.

According to the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the six-week-long family violence education program, which requires a fee, is granted if the individual's crime is not a serious felony. Upon successful completion, the charges are dropped.

In March, Spievey signed a one-year contract with the Lions, according to ESPN, who reports "the 5-foot-11, 195-pound safety started two games last season, but he was placed on injured reserve in mid-November because of a concussion."
